COLUMBIA — In a surprising turn of events, no quarterbacks were selected in the second and third rounds of the 2024 NFL draft on Friday, causing a delay in South Carolina football’s Spencer Rattler’s NFL prospects.
Rattler, who served as the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback for two years after transferring from Oklahoma, has yet to be drafted through three rounds. However, his teammate Xavier Legette was taken as the 32nd overall pick in the first round. Legette had been Rattler’s go-to wide receiver during their time at South Carolina.
While it was never a certainty that Rattler would be selected in the first round, some reports had speculated about the possibility. The general expectation was that he would be drafted in either the second or third round.
In March, the Las Vegas Raiders traded quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the Los Angeles Rams, leaving their starting QB position somewhat uncertain, with potential contenders being Aidan O’Connell or Gardner Minshew. Given this position change, many anticipated that the Raiders might choose Rattler in the draft to expand their quarterback options. The Raiders held the 13th pick in the first round, the 44th pick in the second round, and the 77th pick in the third round. If Rattler is still available by the 112th pick in the fourth round, the Raiders may consider drafting him.
Reports had linked Rattler to potential destinations such as the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Giants, and the Rams. Prior to Friday, Rattler had been in discussions with the Denver Broncos and the Minnesota Vikings, but both teams selected a quarterback in the first round.
What to Expect for Spencer Rattler in Rounds 4-7 of the NFL Draft
As mock drafts projected Rattler to be off the board by the end of the third round, his potential landing spots become less predictable. The Seattle Seahawks could kick off the fourth round by selecting Rattler with the 102nd pick, providing him an opportunity to learn from current QB Geno Smith, whose contract expires in 2025. Another possibility is the New York Giants, who hold the 107th pick.
